Bonjour, Sempé: The World in Lines

Exhibition Dates: September 10, 2026 – January 3, 2027

Venue: My Art Museum, One Grove

Today, we live in an age where we consume images faster than ever before. In an environment filled with short-form videos and intense visual stimuli, the drawings of Jean-Jacques Sempé, rather, tell us more stories when we take the time to look at them slowly.

They are not simply drawings, but profound observations of human beings and records of life captured through laughter. This is why Sempé’s humorous and leisurely drawings are needed once again by those of us living busy and hectic lives. In particular, this exhibition does not simply recall Sempé as a figure from the past, but offers empathy and gentle comfort to those of us living today, transcending time through the people and everyday scenes depicted by Sempé.

At My Art Museum, One Grove Branch, approximately 130 works and archival materials will be presented in one place, including original drawings that are rarely seen in Korea, original posters, prints, publications, and various other materials. In addition, the exhibition presents tools personally used by Sempé, along with materials documenting his drawing process, allowing visitors to naturally follow the creative process through which each drawing came into being.

Organized to commemorate the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and Korea, this exhibition goes beyond simply introducing an artist who represents France. Moving beyond the familiar image of Sempé as “the illustrator of Le Petit Nicolas,” the exhibition focuses on shedding new light on the artistic world of Jean-Jacques Sempé as a drawing artist who observed people and life with the utmost delicacy.

Jean-Jacques Sempé returns nearly ten years after his previous exhibition in Korea. Through this exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to encounter him anew—not merely as an “illustrator,” but as a “drawing artist” of humor.
